Position Summary/Position

 

The Technical Writer (L&D) is responsible for helping to create quality and consistent training support products as part of the overall training life cycle of all L&D programs and initiatives. The Technical Writer works independently or collaboratively as part of IEHP’s Instructional Design Team to translate information on IEHP products, services, procedures, workflows, technology, or other concepts into training documentation that is easily understood in a variety of structured formats. The Technical Writer also serves as the department’s gatekeeper of style and consistency standards for written documentation produced by L&D. 

Major Functions (Duties and Responsibilities)

 

The Technical Writer (L&D) will use their talent for technical communication/documentation to:
1. Write specialized training content in support of IEHP’s L&D Department initiatives. This includes but is not limited to training manuals, student materials, infographics, job aids, or other specialized content created to support the training lifecycle.   
2. Publish and maintain style guides and templates for written documentation produced by others. 
3. Supports internal staff development on following style guidance in their written work. 
4. Create content using new electronic-based tools (i.e. WalkMe) to provide new forms of digital help and performance support for Team Members. Build and maintain aids that go beyond traditional documentation, such as online video, demos, guided tours, and other educational techniques.
5. Interact with L&D staff, project stakeholders to include SMEs, sponsors, and other collaborators in the development of training and training support materials.
6. Conducting basic project management tasks to ensure project efforts remain on target, stakeholders are informed and involved, and resources needed for success are identified and utilized effectively.
7. Determine the clearest and most logical way to present information for the greatest reader comprehension.
8. Act as an Editor to ensure consistency in training documentation produced by the department.
9. Providing support for other duties as required to ensure the organization’s training operations are successful.
10. Explore new writing methods and technologies to recommend and implement innovative solutions.

Experience Qualifications

 

Three (3) years of industry experience as a Technical Writer, Technical Editor, Copy Editor, or related field. Digital work portfolio required as part of candidate submissions. Previous experience writing documentation and procedural materials for multiple audiences on a variety of topics. Experience creating infographics to communicate workflow processes and abstract topics.

Preferred Experience

 

Previous experience writing documentation for a training organization or healthcare-related organization preferred.

Education Qualifications

 

Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, Education, Journalism, Instructional Design, or directly related field from an accredited institution required.

Professional Certification

 

Certified Professional Technical Communicator (CPTC) (preferred)
Adobe Digital Publishing (preferred)

Drivers License Required

Yes, must have a valid California Driver's License.

Knowledge Requirement

 

- Knowledge of industry standards for writing style to include Chicago Manual of Style and Microsoft Manual of Style
- Creation of templates and guides for use by others for document creation 
- Previous knowledge/use of writing content for electronic support tools or digital help products such as WalkMe (preferred)
- Knowledge of writing for localization, translation and in support of 508 and ADA compliance 
- Working knowledge of CSS, HTML, and other formatting techniques
- Expert in U.S. English style, usage, grammar, and punctuation.

Skills Requirement

 

- Superior written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail
- Adept at creating clean, visually engaging content
- Highly Proficient with layout publishing/writing tools including Adobe InDesign, Adobe Acrobat Pro, and MS Publisher
- Expert level experience with MS Office Suite. 
- Proficient with image editing software including Adobe Photoshop and Snag-It.

Working Conditions

 

Position is eligible for telecommuting/remote work location model upon completing the necessary steps and receiving HR approval. The incumbent approved to telecommute may periodically be required to report to IEHP’s main campus for mandatory in-person meetings or for other business needs determined by IEHP leadership.

A reasonable salary expectation is between $70,012.80  - $89,273.60, based upon experience and internal equity.
